Automotive Technology

General Service Technician 1 - 0.5 credit   (grades 9-12)
An introduction to maintaining the automotive systems (brakes, engines, electronics, and suspension & steering) in a vehicle - including the proper tools and how to work safely in the shop.  Students will do hands-on work on vehicles in the shop.

General Service Technician 2 / Diesel - 0.5 credit     (grades 9-12)

Prerequisite: Successful completion of General Service Technician 1.  This class will provide the students with time in the automotive lab, as about half of the class will be dedicated to completing tasks required by the National Automotive Technician Education Foundation (NATEF) for national certification through the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) program.  Students will continue tasks begun in General Service Technician 1 and will finish basic training in the five remaining areas of the ASE certification. Students in this course will have the opportunity to earn dual credit at Mitchell Technical Institute.

Automotive Brakes / Manual Transmission & Drivetrain - 1.0 credit    (grades 10-12)
Prerequisites: Successful completion of General Service Technician 1 and students must be at least 16 years old.  Students will learn the theory and repair of disc, drum and anti-lock brakes and manual transmissions and drivetrains.

Automotive Electrical and Electronics / Heating, Ventilation & Air-Conditioning - 1.0 credit    (grades 10-12)
Prerequisites: Successful completion of General Service Technician 1 and students must be at least 16 years old.  Students will learn electrical theory, Ohm's Law and electronic repair,  and HVAC theory and repair.

Automotive Engines / Engine Performance - 1.0 credit    (grades 10-12)
Prerequisites: Successful completion of General Service Technician 1 and students must be at least 16 years old. Students will learn engine theory, engine rebuilding and maintenance of the computer engine control system.

Automotive Steering and Suspension / Automatic Transmissions - 1.0 credit    (grades 10-12)
Prerequisites: Successful completion of General Service Technician 1 and students must be at least 16 years old.  Students will learn alignment, steering, suspension, and automatic transmission theory and repair.
