In the PLTW Biomedical Sciences (BMS) Program students explore the concepts of human medicine and are introduced to topics such as physiology, genetics, microbiology and public health.  This dynamic program uses hands-on, real-world problems to engage and challenge students.  Students interested in math, science and the human body will find the PLTW Biomedical Sciences program a great introduction to the numerous medical fields.  More information on PLTW can be found at www.PLTW.org.

Biomedical Science Courses:

Principles of Biomedical Science (PBS) - 1 credit     (grades 10-12)
This course provides an introduction to the biomedical sciences through engaging hands-on projects and problems. Students investigate concepts of biology and medicine as they explore health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, sickle-cell disease, and infectious diseases. The activities and projects introduce students to human physiology, basic biology, biochemistry, medicine, and research processes and allow students to design experiments to solve problems. Key biological concepts including homeostasis, metabolism, inheritance of traits, and defense against disease are embedded in the curriculum.

Human Body Systems (HBS) - 1 credit     (grades 10-12)
Required prerequisite: Successful completion of Principles of Biomedical Science (PBS).  Students examine the interactions of body systems as they explore identity, communication, power, movement, protection, and homeostasis. Students design experiments, investigate the structures and functions of the human body, and use sensors to monitor body functions such as muscle movement, reflex and voluntary action, and respiration. Exploring science in action, students build organs and tissues on a skeletal manikin®, work through interesting real world cases and often play the role of biomedical professionals to solve medical mysteries.

** Students who successfully complete both Principles of Biomedical Science and Human Body Systems and meet additional requirements have the option to apply for college credit.  

Medical Interventions (MI) - 1 credit    (grades 11-12) 
Required prerequisite: Successful completion of Human Body Systems (HBS).  Students investigate the variety of interventions involved in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease as they follow the lives of a fictitious family.  The course is a 
“How-To” manual for maintaining overall health and homeostasis in the body as students explore the following:
 ·        how to prevent and fight infection
 ·        how to screen and evaluate the code in human  DNA
 ·        how to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer
 ·        how to prevail when the organs of the body begin to fail
 Through these scenarios, students are exposed to the wide range of interventions related to immunology, surgery, genetics, pharmacology, medical devices, and diagnostics.  Interventions may range from simple diagnostic tests to treatment of  complex diseases and disorders.

** Students who successfully complete Medical Interventions and meet additional requirements have the option to apply for college credit.
